Fad diets are popular because people want a quick fix. People want a quick fix in all aspects of their life. They want to step up the career ladder as quickly as possible, they want to build relationships quickly, they want to get rich quickly, and they want their dream body quickly. I admire people for their aspirations however nothing worth having comes quickly.
The things that matter whether it be relationships, careers, or health, take time and hard work to achieve. We live in a world where we are all impatient but we should focus on structuring our lives in the best way possible and only then will the rewards feel greater and be greater.
So many people do fad diets because they can’t be bothered waiting and they want results now. Drop a dress size in one week with our fitness retreat, get a 6 pack in 6 weeks, or lose weight drinking our smoothies that taste of soil. One thing you need to remember is Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Many people prefer to try the quick fix of a fad diet instead of making the effort to lose weight through long-term changes to their lifestyle by including exercise and good nutrition. For most of these fad diets, weight loss is due to the removal of certain types of food or even worse a complete food group. Obviously if you take out a food group then you are bound to lose weight as that will be a big chunk of your daily calories.
The problem with doing it this way is that you are taking essential nutrients out of your diet which won’t make you feel good at all. Your body won’t like this change, even if you do when you jump on the scales. They won’t be likeable when you stop the fad diet you are following and you can’t stick to the cabbage diet for the rest of your life.
It is likely that much of the weight you lose is from water and lean muscle rather than body fat. Weight lost should be fat lost. If it is lean muscle then your body is basically eating itself and using the lean muscle as energy. If it is water that is lost then you will just put the weight back on when you introduce carbohydrates back in to your diet.
Pick up a litre of water and it feels quite heavy. Now imagine losing that weight. Well you can do just by taking carbohydrates out of your diet for a short period of time. Many fad diets include cutting carbohydrates from the diet. For every gram of glycogen that is stored in the body, your body will retain 2.7 grams of water. Your body is able to store up to 500 grams of glycogen in the body which equates to 1.35kg of water being held. Take out carbohydrates for a week and by the end you will be around 2-3kg lighter.
This is not healthy at all as you need to be well hydrated for a number of reasons and you need carbohydrates to be in your diet too. As soon as you bring these carbohydrates back in to your diet then your water retention will just go back up to where it should be, which will mean you will regain the weight.
Fad diets are not natural at all and in my opinion they do more damage than good. They encourage fast weight loss in a short period of time through unsafe and unrealistic methods. Most people are unable to keep up with the demands of a diet that limits their food choices or requires them to consume the same foods over and over again. People following faddy diets generally end up putting the weight straight back on and a lot of the time end up heavier than they started.
Another frustration of fad diets is that they do not intend on making you healthier. If there was a fad diet that included all food groups and improved our health then I think we would all sign up. The only diet that does intend on making you healthier and includes all food groups is a balanced diet.
A balanced diet is one that includes carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Through consuming all of these food groups your body is able to function properly. You will feel more energised, your moods will be better, and you will be improving your health in a variety of other ways.
Everyone should sign up to the best diet and that is a balanced diet.
What all people need to understand is that there is no magic potion or quick fix to weight loss. The best way to lose weight is through sufficient exercise and activity, a balanced diet, and a positive mindset. Only then will you be able to lose weight, feel great, look amazing, and keep the weight off.
Points to remember
- You should never cut a food group from your diet
- You should be losing body fat, not muscle or water
- You will lose weight but gain it back straight away if you follow a fad diet
- There is no quick fix for losing weight
- The best way for weight loss is by following a balanced diet
